Welcome to the Akau Hana Outrigger Canoe Club

Founded in Santa Cruz, CA in 1986 by Sharon and Stewart Saul, Akau Hana has members ranging in age and experience from beginners to world-class athletes; from grade-schoolers to grandparents. Our club is a growing, dynamic organization committed to fostering and promoting teamwork and the ocean experience to all persons regardless of physical abilities. We do this through the promotion of teamwork, family (ohana), physical exercise, environmental awareness, respect, sharing, and aloha (love). Our goal is to continually broaden community awareness of traditional Polynesian values and promote ocean, environmental, and athletic awareness for all participants. Akau Hana Outrigger Canoe Club is a Federal, tax deductible, charitable 501(c)3 non profit organization.
The mission of Akau Hana Outrigger Canoe Club is to improve the quality of life for persons without regard to age, gender, creed, ethnicity, or physical ability or disability. Through the venue of utilizing one, two, four or six-person Polynesian outrigger canoes, we train, foster, and promote physical mental, emotional, and spiritual enhancement as well as provide diversity and multi-ethnicity training and respect. We do this in the following 3 main areas:
  • Community Outreach
  • Recreational Paddling
  • Competitive Paddling
